Gaza Herald_Türkiye’s Communications Directorate has released a new book titled Murdering the Truth – Israel’s Campaign Against Journalism, offering an in-depth look at the humanitarian and historical dimensions of Israel’s attacks on journalists in Gaza.
In a statement issued Wednesday, the Directorate said the book published in Turkish, English, and Arabic, documents Israel’s systematic targeting of journalists in Gaza, especially after October 2023, framing these events as part of the historical record and the global responsibility to bear witness.
The book includes a foreword by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and details Israel’s killing of journalists, its deliberate destruction of communication networks, and its efforts to silence those reporting from the ground, all backed by extensive evidence, testimonies, and documentation.
It recounts the bombing of journalists’ homes and the targeting of their families. It also tells the life stories of 283 journalists, including 37 women, who were killed by Israel while wearing press vests and carrying cameras as they attempted to do their jobs.
‘Israel Is Targeting Journalists Who Are Trying to Reveal the Truth
In his foreword, Erdoğan notes that while wars and conflict have always marked human history, our understanding of those events has survived only because they were documented.
He emphasized that recording history is just as vital as shaping it, and stressed that in times of rapidly unfolding global crises, journalists who document events not only help the world understand what is happening today, but also preserve the truth for future generations.
Erdoğan said ensuring the safety of journalists, especially those working in war zones is one of the core responsibilities of governments. When states fail to protect them, he argued, the truth cannot be shared or known.
According to Erdoğan, the world’s reaction to Israel’s genocide in Gaza since October 2023 is proof of the reality Türkiye is trying to highlight. He stated:
“Israel is not only killing an entire population primarily women and children through occupation and collective punishment. It also wants to erase any trace of these massacres and persuade the international community that what it is doing in Gaza is normal. To make that possible, Israel is targeting the journalists who are trying to expose the truth behind its narrative.”
He added that Israel, disregarding every norm of war and humanitarian law, even strikes the homes and families of journalists to silence anyone trying to report what is happening, leaving Gaza’s press workers without not only freedom of the press, but even the basic right to live.
“I pay my respects to the journalists whom Israel brutally murdered. Their courage has already secured them an enduring place in the history of journalism,” Erdoğan said. “We will continue working to ensure that the truths they risked and lost their lives to reveal reach an even wider audience.”
