DaysofPal- A video report broadcast by Sky News sought to shed light on the final days of renowned Gazan doctor Adnan Al-Borsh, covering his work during the war on Gaza, his subsequent arrest, and the announcement of his death on April 19, 2024 in Israel’s Ofer prison.
A new testimony was provided by a former prisoner, who was held with Adnan Al-Borsh, to lawyers from HaMoked human rights organization, saying that ‘In mid-April 2024, Dr. Adnan Al-Borsh was brought to Section 23 of Ofer Prison. The prison guards delivered him in a deplorable state, clearly showing signs of assault, with visible injuries on his body, and he was partially unclothed, with the lower part of his body exposed.”
The former prisoner continued: ‘The prison guards threw him into the middle of the yard and left him there. Dr. Adnan Al-Borsh was unable to stand, so another prisoner assisted him and took him to one of the rooms. Moments later, the screams of prisoners were heard coming from the room, announcing the death of Dr. Adnan Al-Borsh.'”
Adnan Al-Borsh, head of the orthopedics department at Al-Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza, continued his work despite numerous threats.
Following an initial raid on the hospital, he relocated to northern hospitals but was arrested at Al-Awda Hospital in December 2023. He remained imprisoned for four months until his death.
In a joint statement, the ‘Prisoners’ Affairs Authority’ and the ‘Palestinian Prisoners Society’ described his death as a ‘deliberate assassination.’
The results of the investigation that the Israeli authorities claimed to have initiated into his death have yet to be released, and Al-Borsh’s body remains in custody.
Several months ago, the Hebrew newspaper Haaretz published a report on the detention and death of Dr. Adnan Al-Borsh, a Palestinian doctor and head of the orthopedics department at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza, in secret Israeli camps. His death was officially announced on May 2 under unclear circumstances.
The Hebrew newspaper reported that among the cases of Palestinians arrested in Gaza, transferred to detention centers, and subsequently dying in Israeli prisons during the conflict, the case of Dr. Adnan Al-Borsh stands out and raises numerous questions.
Al-Borsh, 50, was working at Al-Shifa Hospital when the war began last October. As Israeli forces targeted him, he moved north to the Indonesian Hospital in Beit Lahia. When that location also became a conflict zone, he relocated to Al-Awda Hospital in the Jabalia refugee camp, north of Gaza City.
Yasmine al-Borsh, the wife of Dr. Al-Borsh, told Palestinian reporters that her husband only returned home from Jabalia Hospital during a week-long ceasefire in late November, after which he resumed work. ‘He called me whenever he could to ask about our six children,’ she said. ‘I asked him to come home, but he insisted on staying with the patients.
In circumstances that remain unclear, the Israeli occupation army arrested Al-Borsh last December. According to eyewitnesses who spoke with his family, when the Israeli occupation forces arrived at Al-Awda Hospital, he was ordered to go down to the hospital yard, and after that, he was not seen again in Gaza.
Haaretz quoted an Israeli army spokesman who said that Al-Borsh was documented in an Israeli army detention center on December 19, before being transferred the following day to the Kishon detention center for security prisoners, near Haifa.
According to security sources who spoke to Haaretz, after being interrogated by the Shin Bet security service at the facility, Al-Borsh was transferred to Ofer Prison, which is operated by the Israel Prison Service.
According to available information, Al-Borsh died of torture and medical negligence in Ofer Prison on April 19, and his body is still being held. It is also noted that he had been injured while at the Indonesian Hospital about five months earlier.”
The Commission of Prisoners’ Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society announced the martyrdom of two detainees from Gaza, including Dr. Adnan Ahmed Attia Al-Borsh (50 years old) from Jabalia, a consultant and head of the orthopedics department at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza.
The human rights organizations stated in a joint statement that the martyred Dr. Al-Borsh was arrested by the Israeli occupation army in December 2023 while he was at Al-Awda Hospital, along with a group of doctors.
It is worth noting that Dr. Al-Borsh is one of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners who were kidnapped by the Israeli occupation forces, subjected to torture and medical neglect, and died in Israeli prisons. The Israeli occupation forces continue to hold their bodies.
