DayofPal– A 51-year-old Palestinian prisoner from Gaza, Ashraf Mohammad Fakhri Abd Abu Wardah, has died in Israeli custody due to brutal assaults, the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society reported.
Abu Wardah, who had been held since November 20, 2023, died earlier today at Soroka Medical Center in occupied territories after he had been transferred there from Ktziot Prison in the Negev Desert two days prior.
According to his family, Abu Wardah was detained in Jabalia while trying to go soth of the Gaza Strip; he had no history of health problems before his detention. Seemingly, the man died due to sever beating and as a result of Israeli medical negligence at the Soroka Hospital.
His death brings the total number of Palestinian prisoners who have died in Israeli custody since the onset of the Gaza war to at least 50, the highest recorded in the history of the Palestinian prisoners’ movement since 1967.
The situation in Israeli prisons has drawn significant concern, with numerous accounts and evidence pointing to instances of physical and sexual abuse against detainees, especially those from Gaza.
As of early December, the number of Palestinians detained in Israeli prisons exceeded 10,300, including 90 women and at least 345 children, according to reports from the organization.
Yet, there is no specific number of Palestinians detained from Gaza with hundreds remain subject to the crime of forced disappearance by the Israeli military in Gaza,, according to the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society.
It also revealed that the number of people arrested by Israeli forces in the enclave is estimated in the thousands since the beginning of the war. It added in a statement that dozens of those arrested have been killed as a result of “systematic torture crimes against Gaza detainees at an unprecedented rate”.
It explained that the latest confirmation received from the Israeli side of the number of those arrested came in early December, when the prison administration acknowledged 1,772 people held and classified as “illegal combatants”, including children and women.
