In a historic move, Mexico has announced that it recognizes Palestine as a sovereign state and has upgraded its diplomatic representation in Mexico City from a “Special Delegation” to a full-fledged embassy. The announcement was made by Spanish-language Twitter account for Palestine, “Palestino Hoy,” in a tweet published last Sunday.
The Mexican Senate adopted a resolution last November to recognize Palestine as an independent state. The resolution coincided with the anniversary of the Palestinian declaration of independence, which was issued on November 15, 1985.
The Act for Palestine Foundation, a non-governmental organization that advocates for the rights of Palestinians, welcomed Mexico’s announcement and praised its leadership and solidarity. The foundation said in a statement that Mexico’s recognition of Palestine was a “historic and courageous act” that reflected the aspirations of millions of Mexicans and Palestinians who share a common struggle for freedom and dignity.
The Palestinian delegation in Mexico City, which was established in 1975 as an information office and later upgraded to a “Special Delegation” in 2013, will now become a full embassy with all the privileges and immunities granted to diplomatic missions. The head of the delegation said that he was honored and grateful for Mexico’s decision and that he looked forward to strengthening the bilateral relations between the two countries.
Mexico is the latest country to recognize Palestine as a state. The United Nations General Assembly granted Palestine a non-member observer state status in 2012. However, Israel and the United States do not recognize Palestine as a state and oppose any unilateral moves that could undermine the peace process.
