As fears grow of a broader conflict involving Iran and Hezbollah, Qatar, Egypt, and the US have scheduled a new round of talks for August 15.
The talks come in light of an expected retaliation following the July 30 killing of Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut and the July 31 assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.
Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu, who has vowed not to end the war until Hamas no longer poses a threat to Israelis, said he would send a delegation.
Israel’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich pushed back against the White House’s accusation on Friday that he was “dead wrong” in asserting that the ceasefire deal on the table would be a surrender to Hamas.
Hamas demands that the mediators present a plan to implement the agreement they accepted on 2/7/2024, based on Biden’s vision and the UN Security Council resolution.
“We call for the occupation to be held accountable, instead of pursuing additional rounds of negotiations or new proposals that would only provide cover for the occupation’s aggression and grant it more time to continue its genocide against our people,” the statement added.”
