DaysofPal – January 7 marks Palestinian Martyrs’ Day, an annual occasion observed by Palestinians to honor the memory of those who gave their lives in defense of Palestine and its dignity.
In a statement marking the day, the Prisoners’ Media Office said that over the past two years Gaza has endured what it described as a “torrent of blood,” resulting in more than 70,000 deaths.
The office added that hundreds of others were killed in cities across the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem. On this occasion, it said, Palestinians also remember the martyrs of the prisoners’ movement who died under torture and policies of “slow death” inside Israeli prisons.
The office documented the deaths of 323 Palestinian prisoners since 1967, including 86 who have died inside Israeli detention facilities since the start of the war on Gaza in October 2023. It described this figure as an unprecedented escalation in crimes committed against Palestinian detainees.
According to the statement, violations committed against Palestinian prisoners will not expire with time, stressing continued commitment to pursuing justice for their rights and blood.
The office vowed to persist in internationalizing the prisoners’ cause across all legal, political, regional, and international arenas, pledging to exert pressure through every available channel to halt what it described as systematic crimes and to work toward securing the prisoners’ release.
It also called on international and human rights institutions, particularly the International Committee of the Red Cross and the United Nations, to urgently inspect conditions inside Israeli prisons and take action to end the suffering of Palestinian detainees.
The office also called on the official Palestinian leadership to pursue accountability through the International Criminal Court and to take action in response to recorded testimonies and evidence of grave crimes against prisoners, such as torture and sexual assault.
