Thursday, July 13, 2023 – According to Hebrew sources, the Israeli occupation is set to take punitive action against Amnesty International over its “Boycott Law”.
Haaretz, the Hebrew newspaper, reported that the Israeli Tax Authority has informed Amnesty International that it is considering revoking its tax benefits as a result of its adherence to the boycott law.
The Israeli government aims to hold the organization’s branch in Israel responsible for the calls made by the international organization to boycott settlement products and impose an embargo on Israeli weapons, as stated by the Hebrew newspaper.
This move comes as part of a seven-year battle led by the current Minister of Finance, Bezalel Smotrich, against Amnesty International.
Last year, Smotrich sought the assistance of his predecessor, Avigdor Lieberman, to revoke these benefits based on the law designed to impose restrictions on associations and institutions that advocate for economic, cultural, or academic boycotts against Israeli settlement or the occupation.
Smotrich’s office refused to comment on whether he is involved in the current process or not.
The Boycott Law, which was passed in the Knesset in 2011, allows the Minister of Finance to consult with the Minister of Justice to impose a series of restrictions on any association or institution that calls for the boycott of settlements or the occupation.
