The Israeli occupation forces forced a Jerusalemite family on Wednesday, August 24th, 2022, to self-demolish their residence in Silwan, south of Al-Aqsa Mosque, under the pretext of not having a permit.
Local sources reported that the Abu Ramoz family began demolishing their house located in the Ras al-Amoud neighborhood in Silwan, after they emptied all its contents the previous day in a heartbreaking scene.
Sources added that Before the family began the demolition process, the Israeli occupation forces brought their machinery to carry out the demolition and fined the family its costs, but the family refused and completed the demolition with the help of the neighborhood’s residents.
The owner of the house, Faraj Abu Ramuz, told Wafa: “About a month and a half ago, the Israeli occupation municipality informed us of the demolition decision, and we resorted to several lawyers, and it cost us about seventy thousand shekels for lawyers’ fees, and 50 thousand shekels as building fines, and all of that was for nothing, and we had to demolish it with our own hands. Before the occupation mechanisms demolish it and incur the costs of demolition.”
He added, “The house has been built for a year and a half. I live in it with my wife and eight children, the youngest of whom is Ibrahim, who is ten days old. Today, we are all homeless, and despite all that, we will remain stationed on our land.
The Israeli occupation authorities have demolished, as of last June, around 300 buildings in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem since the beginning of this year, according to statistics documented by the United Nations Organization for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OCHA). regions (C).
With regard to demolitions in the city of Jerusalem specifically, Wadi Hilweh Information Center monitored 80 demolitions in Jerusalem, as of the last June, of which 37 were “self-demolition” carried out by their owners, in order to avoid paying huge fines and demolition fees to the occupation’s municipality staff and vehicles.
it’s worth noting that demolitions targeted residential facilities, “houses, residential rooms.”
