DaysofPal — Israeli occupation forces have intensified attacks against Palestinian fishermen in the Gaza Strip, leaving one fisherman injured and causing significant damage to fishing equipment, said a local official.
Zakaria Bakr, head of the Fishermen’s Committees at the Union of Agricultural Work Committees, said on Saturday that fisherman Nasser Ramzi Bakr was shot by Israeli naval forces at dawn while working off the coast of Gaza.
The incident comes amid an unprecedented escalation targeting fishermen and their livelihoods at sea.
Bakr stated that Israeli naval boats and drones have been carrying out a systematic, destructive policy.
Over the past 48 hours, he reported a serious development in which an Israeli drone struck a small fishing vessel belonging to Khalil Ibrahim Al-Bardawil.
The attack split the boat in two and caused it to sink completely, although the fishermen on board survived.
He added that rocket fire and heavy machine gun shooting have been continuously directed at small fishing boats, in an effort to intimidate fishermen and prevent them from accessing the sea.
According to the Fishermen’s Committees, the financial losses suffered by Gaza’s fishing sector during the ongoing Israeli military campaign have exceeded $75 million.
The damage has reportedly devastated maritime infrastructure and ports, crippling one of Gaza’s key productive sectors and depriving thousands of families of their primary source of income.
