The Municipality of Deir al-Balah announced on Thursday that recent Israeli evacuation orders in the east and south of the city have led to the displacement of nearly 100,000 residents and the shutdown of 20 shelter centers.
In a press statement received by “Days of Palestine,” the municipality highlighted the dire situation in the western part of the city, where the population density has reached a critical point.
With not a single square meter of empty space available to accommodate the influx of displaced people, residents are left with nowhere to go amidst the shrinking humanitarian zone.
Deir al-Balah, which was initially designated by Israel as a “safe humanitarian zone” at the onset of its aggression against Gaza, is now home to more than half of the Gaza Strip’s population.
Despite this, the Israeli military has escalated its attacks on the city.
The municipality concluded its statement by urging the international community to pressure Israel to halt its policy of forced displacement, which has become a systematic practice.
The city of Deir al-Balah, located in central Gaza, is grappling with compounded crises following a new wave of displacement from its eastern and southern regions.
This was triggered by Israeli orders issued in mid-August, directing the evacuation of neighborhoods in the city, as well as areas in central and southern Gaza, to the western strip of Deir al-Balah, designated by Israel as a “safe humanitarian zone.”
