DayofPal– Senior Israeli officials are recommending the establishment of a permanent security buffer zone in parts of Beit Hanoun, in northern Gaza town, with aim to prevent Gaza residents from returning to their areas, according to reports from Israeli media on Sunday.
This proposed zone, targeting elevated areas overlooking the illegal Israeli settlement of Sderot, is said to be a strategic measure aimed at tightening Israeli control over the region with surveillance and fire.
According to Israel’s Army Radio, senior commanders leading the military operations in northern Gaza argue that this buffer zone would ensure that Gaza residents are permanently barred from returning to certain parts of Beit Hanoun.
“The plan focuses on elevated areas that provide direct oversight of Israeli settlements, allowing for potential control through fire and surveillance,” the report stated.
Additionally, the proposed plan aims to eliminate any structures in Beit Hanoun that could offer visibility of Israeli settlements, surrounding lands, or critical infrastructure like the Sderot railway line. Despite the military’s push, this recommendation has not yet been approved by political leadership.
Since October 5, 2024, Israel has besieged and carried out extensive ground operations in northern Gaza, justifying its atrocities as efforts to prevent resistance fighters from regrouping. Palestinians, however, accuse Israel of using this as a pretext to seize territory and forcibly displace residents.
The humanitarian situation in northern Gaza has reached catastrophic levels. For over three months, basic supplies such as food, medicine, and fuel have been blocked, leaving those who remain there on the brink of starvation.
This assault is the latest chapter in what many Palestinians and observers describe as a genocidal campaign in Gaza. Since the war began on October 7, 2023, more than 46,500 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have lost their lives to Israeli brutality.
In response to international calls to hols Israel accountable, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants in November 2024 for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Simultaneously, Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its atrocities in the besieged Gaza enclave.
