DaysofPal- Israeli naval forces carried out a pre-dawn operation on Thursday targeting vessels from the “Steadfastness Flotilla” in international waters, according to multiple reports and statements from both Israeli sources and flotilla organizers.
Israel’s military radio said that 21 ships out of a reported 58 participating in the convoy bound for the Gaza Strip were stopped during the operation. It added that the interceptions were completed within a few hours and did not result in any unusual incidents or reported injuries.
The same source said that the operation, which was carried out more than 1,000 kilometers from Israeli shores, was intended to allow for additional action against any remaining vessels. Officials described the move as an initial phase, indicating that additional interceptions could follow should other ships continue toward Gaza instead of turning back.
Organizers of the flotilla, however, strongly rejected the operation. Rana Hamida, a spokesperson and member of the flotilla’s steering committee, said Israeli authorities had detained several vessels in an attempt to block the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Hamida stressed that the ships were operating in full compliance with international law, describing the interception as a “clear violation” of international conventions. She added that the flotilla was carrying only essential food and medical supplies, dismissing Israeli claims to the contrary as false.
Members of the flotilla’s leadership also underscored their commitment to the mission, stating that participants were prepared to make significant sacrifices to challenge the blockade on Gaza. They emphasized that the initiative is strictly peaceful and humanitarian, aimed at assisting civilians facing severe shortages and deteriorating living conditions.
Reports also indicated that Israeli forces boarded at least one vessel near the Greek island of Crete, where part of the flotilla had been sailing.
The interception followed an earlier incident on Wednesday evening, when Israeli naval units reportedly approached and engaged the international convoy hundreds of miles from Israel.
In a separate statement, organizers of the “Global Steadfastness Flotilla” said their ships were experiencing signal interference off the coast of Greece. They also reported that unidentified warships had been seen approaching the convoy, heightening tensions in the area.
The flotilla mission, launched by international activists, aims to deliver humanitarian assistance to Gaza and draw attention to the ongoing blockade, which participants argue has led to worsening conditions for civilians in the territory.
