DaysofPal – At least 19 Palestinians were killed in an Israeli airstrike on the Fahmi Al-Jarjawi School in Gaza City, the latest in a deadly pattern of attacks on schools sheltering displaced civilians. The facility had been housing families forced from their homes by nearly eight months of war.
Humanitarian agencies report that around 95 percent of Gaza’s schools have been damaged or destroyed by Israeli bombardment since the war began in October 2023. The strike on Al-Jarjawi follows a series of similar attacks that have left hundreds dead.
In one of the earliest incidents, Israeli airstrikes on the al-Buraq School in November 2023 killed more than 50 people, including children.
Later that month, two separate attacks on the Al Fakhoura School in Jabalia refugee camp killed at least 65.
Strikes in the southern town of Abasan in July 2024 killed over 30 at the al-Awda School, and in August, more than 100 were killed when Israeli forces bombed al-Tabin School as people gathered for morning prayers.
More recently, in April, at least 33 were killed and over 100 wounded when airstrikes hit three schools in the Tuffah neighborhood of Gaza City.
The Gaza Government Media Office accused Israel of carrying out a “deliberate and systematic campaign” against shelters and displacement centers, saying that 241 such sites have been bombed to date.
The strikes, it added, violate international and humanitarian law and are part of a strategy to maximize civilian casualties.
Officials also highlighted the collapse of Gaza’s healthcare system, citing the destruction of hospitals, severe shortages in medical supplies, and the ongoing blockade preventing the entry of fuel, food, and medicine.
In a sharply worded statement, the local government condemned not only Israel’s actions but also the support of Western allies.
It accused the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, and others of complicity in what it described as a “continuing genocide against civilians in Gaza.”
The statement urged the United Nations and the international community to act swiftly to halt the war, calling for immediate pressure to stop what it termed a “bloodbath.”
