National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said in a press conference Tuesday that ‘Israel’ has not crossed US “red lines” when its airstrikes targeted displaced Palestinians’ tent camp near UNRWA Barracks in Rafah.
However, he made a paradoxical remakes stating that the US is not turning a “blind eye” to the plight of Palestinian civilians, affirming and defending Israel’s estimation of the attack as a “tragic mistake”. The Sunday’s attack killed at least 45 Palestinians in tents, including beheading babies.
With the news of Israeli military tanks proceeding to central Rafah, Kirby continued to defend Israel’s front saying the US has not observed large-scale ground operations and didn’t go in with large units, large numbers of troops, in columns and formations in some sort of coordinated manoeuvre against multiple targets on the ground.”
“We’ve also said we don’t want to see a major ground operation in Rafah that would really make it hard for the Israelis to go after Hamas without causing extensive damage and potentially a large number of deaths. We have not seen that yet,” he said, stating that Israel’s operations on Tuesday were mostly in a corridor on the outskirts of the city.
A report analysis by CNN on the fatal Israeli airstrikes on a tents’ camp of displaced Palestinians near UNRWA barracks in Rafah late Sunday has found that US-made munitions were used to target the civilians in the “safe zone” area.
At least 45 people were killed and hundreds were injured on Sunday’s attack on an overcrowded camp of tents in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.
