The Islamic-Christian Committee in Support of Jerusalem and its Sanctuaries raised concerns on Wednesday, August 23, about the grave implications of a new settlement plan in Jerusalem recently approved by Israeli occupation authorities, with a budget allocation of around one billion shekels for its execution.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the society highlighted that this new plan is one of the largest in years, encompassing the construction of 2,430 settlement units along with a 500-room hotel.
The committee emphasized that the aim of this new plan is to solidify the settler presence in the city of Jerusalem, seize hundreds of dunams of land, besiege and suffocate Palestinian residential communities, and effectively isolate the city from its Palestinian surroundings.
It further revealed that this plan coincides with another scheme formulated by the extremist Israeli National Security Minister, Itamar Ben Gvir, involving the allocation of 40 million dollars to establish new settlement access roads, construct new police stations, and deploy additional security surveillance cameras to connect Jerusalem’s settlements.
In addition, the committee held the international community responsible for its silence regarding these settlement crimes that seek to displace the residents of the holy city. It pointed out that empty diplomatic condemnations are no longer sufficient to halt this escalation of settler activities.
The society urged the international community and influential countries to break their silence and intervene before an impending eruption of the situation on the ground, which no one will be able to prevent.
