DaysofPal- The Israeli Occupation forces (IOF) are currently holding 9,300 Palestinian prisoners in their jails with inhuman conditions and harsh abuse, most of whom are detainees or held under administrative detention, according to a joint statement issued Tuesday by Palestinian prisoners’ institutions.
The statement, citing data from the Israeli Prison Service up to the beginning of December, noted that the figure does not include Palestinians detained in Israeli military camps.
According to the statement, 1,254 prisoners are serving sentences, while the number of female prisoners stands at 51, including two girls.
It added that 350 Palestinian children are being held in Ofer and Megiddo prisons.
The number of administrative detainees, held without charge or trial, has reached 3,350, the institutions said.
Meanwhile, 1,220 detainees are classified by the Israeli occupation as “unlawful combatants,” a category that also includes Arab detainees from Lebanon and Syria.
The statement stressed that this figure does not cover all Gaza detainees held in Israeli military camps.
Palestinian human rights organizations and testimonies from released prisoners report that Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons are subjected to a wide range of abuses, including beatings, torture, sexual assault, starvation, and the denial of medical care to sick prisoners.
At least 100 Palestinian prisoners from Gaza, whose identities are known, have died in Israeli custody since October 7 as a result of torture, medical neglect, and harsh detention conditions, according to the statement.
Rights groups fear that hundreds more remain missing under conditions of enforced disappearance.
The statement also pointed to policies promoted in recent months by Israeli far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, aimed at tightening prison conditions for Palestinian detainees.
These measures include reducing food and water, limiting family visits, and restricting access to showers, policies Palestinian and international organizations have described as inhumane.
