DaysofPal- Local authorities in the Gaza Strip have called on donors and humanitarian organizations to prioritize the delivery of tents and temporary shelters for thousands of Palestinians left homeless by Israeli bombardment.
In a statement on Monday, the Gaza Government Media Office warned that displaced families are enduring harsh winter conditions without shelter. “Securing shelters has become an urgent humanitarian need that cannot be delayed. It is the most pressing need now,” the office said.
The office urged the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organization, which has been coordinating aid efforts, to include tents in upcoming shipments alongside food and other essentials.
Following a temporary truce between Israel and Hamas last month, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians returned to northern Gaza, only to find their homes reduced to rubble. Entire neighborhoods in Gaza City, as well as towns like Jabalia and Beit Hanoon, have been destroyed by Israeli airstrikes.
Gaza’s authorities accused Israel of obstructing aid deliveries, alleging that the country is violating the ceasefire agreement that took effect on January 19. According to the Government Media Office, the agreement stipulates that 60,000 trailers and 200,000 tents must be allowed into Gaza to house the displaced, along with equipment to clear debris.
“But the Israeli occupation is putting obstacles and delaying the execution of the agreement, escalating the humanitarian crisis and the suffering of civilians in the Gaza Strip,” the office stated, warning of “dangerous and unprecedented implications.”
On Tuesday, World Food Program official Antoine Renard acknowledged an increase in aid shipments to Gaza but indicated that some Israeli restrictions remain in place, particularly on items classified as “dual use” with potential military applications.
Since the war began in October 2023, Israeli attacks have killed nearly 62,000 Palestinians, including thousands who remain missing and presumed dead.
