DaysofPal- The head of the Government Media Office in Gaza, Ismail Al-Thawabta has warned of an unprecedented deterioration in humanitarian conditions across the Strip, despite the ongoing ceasefire, saying the territory is facing a “true humanitarian catastrophe” as mass displacement continues and adequate shelter remains unavailable.
Al-Thawabta said Israeli military operations have destroyed around 288,000 housing units since the start of the war, leaving millions of residents without homes.
He noted that Gaza now requires at least 300,000 tents to accommodate the families displaced by the fighting.
According to the official, tens of thousands of families are sleeping in the open air, with most tents either destroyed or rendered unusable by weather and prolonged exposure. Out of 135,000 tents currently present in Gaza, only 10,000 are deemed suitable, an increasingly dire situation as winter rains intensify.
He added that conditions are worsening as displaced families continue moving toward coastal areas and open spaces, where temporary shelters lack adequate protection from cold, rain, and strong winds.
Children, the elderly, and the sick face heightened health risks as a result, he added.
The Government Media Office urged international mediators and guarantors to pressure the Israeli occupation to honor its commitments and immediately allow the entry of emergency shelter supplies, including tents, mobile housing units, and other essential materials needed to protect displaced families.
The official warned that the ongoing restrictions on aid entry are severely undermining relief efforts and deepening the humanitarian crisis.
With winter setting in, he said, the suffering of hundreds of thousands of families will intensify unless there is rapid and coordinated intervention.
