DaysofPal- Human Rights Watch (HRW) has strongly condemned the proposal from President Donald Trump for the United States to take over Gaza as a “heinous moral crime.”
Omar Shakir, the director of HRW’s Palestine office, described the act of displacing Palestinians as “morally shameful” and a blatant violation of human rights.
Shakir’s remarks came in response to Trump’s recent proposal to impose US control over the Gaza Strip and his call for neighboring countries, such as Egypt and Jordan, to receive Palestinians from the region.
“International humanitarian law forbids the forced displacement of the population of an occupied territory. When such forced displacement is widespread, it can amount to a war crime or a crime against humanity”, added Shakir.
During a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, Trump stated, “Palestinians have no alternative but to leave Gaza, and I want to see Jordan and Egypt take Palestinians from Gaza.”
He further asserted that the United States “will take control of the Gaza Strip and own it.”
In a statement issued on Tuesday, HRW criticized the US for its continued provision of weapons and military aid to Israel, arguing that this makes the US a “partner in the serious violations committed against Palestinians in the Strip.”
The organization emphasized that such actions exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where the Israeli occupation has waged a devastating war for over 16 months.
Since October 7, 2023, the conflict has resulted in more than 159,000 casualties, including a significant number of children and women, and over 14,000 missing persons.
HRW has repeatedly accused Israel of committing acts of genocide and ethnic cleansing in Gaza, with the US’s unwavering support enabling the continuation of these alleged violations.
The controversy surrounding Trump’s statements has sparked widespread condemnation from human rights organizations and advocates worldwide. Critics argue that such proposals not only undermine the rights of Palestinians but also risk further destabilizing the region.
As the humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, HRW and other organizations are urging global leaders to take immediate action to address the crisis and ensure the protection of human rights for all individuals in the region.
