DaysofPal- The family of imprisoned Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti has revealed new and alarming details of severe torture he has reportedly endured inside Israeli prisons, as an international campaign calling for his release gains significant momentum.
Qassam Barghouti, Marwan’s son, said Friday that a recently released prisoner informed him of brutal assaults inflicted on his father. According to the testimony, Israeli prison forces “shattered his body, broke his teeth, ribs, and fingers, and severed part of his ear.”
“What are we supposed to do? Who can we speak to? Where do we turn?” Qassam said, describing the daily fear and anxiety his family lives with.
These revelations come as a growing global movement, led by the Barghouti family and supported by civil society organizations in the UK, seeks to place his case at the forefront of political and diplomatic discussions in the aftermath of the Gaza ceasefire.
Major Cultural Figures Join Calls for Release
The Guardian published a report by diplomatic editor Patrick Wintour noting that more than 200 prominent international cultural figures have signed a letter demanding Barghouti’s freedom. Widely regarded as the Palestinian figure most capable of unifying the factions and leading a renewed national liberation project, Barghouti’s case has drawn attention across artistic, literary, and political circles.
The signatories include high-profile authors such as Canadian novelist Margaret Atwood, Zadie Smith, and Ian McEwan; actors Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton, Sir Ian McKellen, and Mark Ruffalo; musicians Sting, Paul Simon, Brian Eno, and Annie Lennox; and artists such as Ai Weiwei. The letter was also signed by acclaimed director Sir Richard Eyre and billionaire Richard Branson.
According to The Guardian, the Israeli refusal to release Barghouti appears to stem less from security considerations and more from concerns over the political influence he could wield in shaping the future Palestinian political system and the prospects of a two-state solution.
A Symbolic Figure with Enduring Popularity
Now 66, Barghouti has spent 23 years in Israeli custody following a trial that was widely condemned as unfair and failing to meet basic legal standards.
He was a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council at the time of his arrest and has consistently ranked as one of the most popular and trusted Palestinian leaders in public opinion polls.
He was arrested on April 15, 2002, in Ramallah and sentenced in 2004 to five life sentences plus 40 years.
As testimonies of torture mount and international pressure intensifies, observers are watching closely to see whether global diplomatic actors will take concrete steps to secure the release of one of the most influential figures in the Palestinian national movement.
