DaysofPal- Hamas Movement has strongly condemned the Israeli decision to convert a building of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency UNRWA in occupied East Jerusalem into military-related facilities.
In a statement, Hamas described the move as the transformation of the UNRWA compound in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood into Israeli military installations, including a military museum and a recruitment office.
The Movement said the decision represents a serious escalation and a “flagrant violation of international law,” as well as a disregard for the United Nations and the protections granted to its agencies.
Hamas said the step is “null and illegitimate,” calling on the international community to take a firm stance against it, reverse the decision, and impose what it described as deterrent sanctions on Israeli occupation.
The group also warned that such actions are part of a broader effort aimed at altering the status of Palestinian land and undermining refugee rights.
The statement further emphasized the need to protect UNRWA from what it called systematic targeting, stressing that the agency represents an international witness to the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes.
Israeli media reports cited by Palestinian outlets said the government had approved the establishment of a new Ministry of Defense complex on the site, including a recruitment office, a military museum, and the office of the defense minister.
Israeli officials reportedly framed the project as part of efforts to strengthen the claims that Jerusalem as Israeli occupation’s capital.
The development comes amid ongoing Israeli aggression over the status and role of UNRWA in East Jerusalem and broader tensions surrounding the city’s governance and international legal standing.
