DaysofPal- A coalition of nations, led by Malaysia and South Africa, is mobilizing to safeguard the integrity of international justice and ensure compliance with rulings from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the International Criminal Court (ICC).
This comes in light of the International Criminal Court’s condemnation of Israel for committing war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip during the ongoing genocide carried out by Israel against Palestinians for over 14 months, where the group seeks to ensure Israel is held accountable for its crimes.
The move comes in response to perceived challenges to the ICJ’s authority and recent efforts by the U.S. Congress to impose sanctions on the ICC.
Dubbed the “Hague Group,” the coalition comprises nine countries: Colombia, Namibia, Chile, Bolivia, Senegal, South Africa, and Malaysia.
According to a report by The Guardian, the group aims to defend the international justice system amid growing tensions over its enforcement, particularly in cases involving the wars in Gaza and Ukraine, as well as human trafficking across the Mediterranean.
South Africa’s Minister of International Relations, Ronald Lamola, emphasized the group’s mission to uphold international law and protect vulnerable populations.
“The formation of The Hague Group sends a clear message: no state is above the law, and no crime will go unpunished,” Lamola stated.
South Africa has previously filed a case at the ICJ accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza.
While the group insists its focus is not solely on Israel, it has criticized the country’s approach to the ICJ’s rulings.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim warned that Israel’s actions “undermine the foundations of international law that the global community must uphold.”
The Hague Group’s efforts reflect mounting frustration in the Global South over what many perceive as double standards by Western powers in enforcing international law.
The coalition’s campaign aligns with a recent report by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, which outlines steps member states can take to ensure Israel complies with ICJ rulings.
Notably, the ICJ has declared Israel’s continued presence in occupied territories illegal and ordered the withdrawal of its forces within 12 months.
The group’s formation underscores a broader push to reinforce the legitimacy of international courts and hold all nations accountable to global legal standards.
