DaysofPal- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed deep concern over the escalating violence in the occupied West Bank and human rights violations in Gaza, calling for an immediate and lasting resolution to the crisis.
Speaking at the 58th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Guterres said, “I am gravely concerned by the rising violence in the occupied West Bank by Israeli settlers and other violations, as well as calls for annexation.”
His remarks come as Israel announced that its troops would remain in West Bank refugee camps for months, with tens of thousands of Palestinians already displaced by ongoing military operations. Israel’s army minister, Israel Katz, stated on Sunday that “40,000 Palestinians have evacuated from the refugee camps of Jenin, Tulkarem, and Nur Shams, which are now empty of residents.” He further instructed soldiers to “prepare for a prolonged presence in the cleared camps for the next year.”
For over a month, Israeli forces have been conducting raids on Palestinian homes and using bulldozers to destroy critical infrastructure, primarily in Jenin and Tulkarem.
Regarding Gaza, Guterres emphasized that “we must avoid at all costs a resumption of hostilities” and called the current ceasefire between Israel and Hamas “precarious.” The people in Gaza have already suffered too much.”
The UN chief called for a comprehensive solution, stating, “It’s time for a permanent ceasefire, the dignified release of all remaining hostages, irreversible progress towards a two-state solution, an end to the occupation, and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, with Gaza as an integral part.”
