DayofPal– A devastating Israeli airstrike on December 6, 2023, annihilated nearly the entire Juha family in Gaza City, marking one of the deadliest attacks in Israel’s ongoing military offensive.
The assault, carried out without prior warning, claimed the lives of approximately 90 civilians, including 71 women and children, and left dozens injured.
According to a comprehensive investigation by Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, Israeli forces targeted the Juha family compound in the densely populated Tuffah neighborhood.
The building, home to 117 people, was obliterated by at least one bomb, reducing it to rubble and killing most of its occupants instantly.
The casualties included primary residents as well as relatives who had been forcibly displaced from the Zeitoun neighborhood.
Survivors described scenes of horror. 14-year-old Liali Raid Zaki Juha recalled the moment of impact: “I couldn’t feel anything. I was buried under the rubble, surrounded by fire. My uncle’s family melted before my eyes.”
Rescue efforts were hampered by widespread communication blackouts, forcing residents to dig survivors out with their bare hands and rudimentary tools.
Eyewitnesses reported that many victims were dismembered by the force of the blast, with remains scattered across the neighborhood. At least 34 bodies remain trapped under the debris, while 56 have been recovered. Seventeen people sustained severe injuries, including burns and amputations.
Euro-Med Monitor’s field investigation found no evidence of military presence in or around the Juha family home before the attack.
The organization reviewed satellite images, witness testimonies, and video footage, concluding that the airstrike violated international humanitarian law by disregarding the principles of distinction, proportionality, and precaution.
Despite the scale of the massacre, Israeli authorities have issued no official justification for the attack.
The Euro-Med report underscores that this assault is part of a larger pattern of systematic destruction, with more than 436,000 homes, approximately 92% of residences in Gaza, either partially or completely destroyed since the war started in October 2023.
The death toll has surpassed 54,000, with the vast majority killed inside their homes.
Legal experts argue that Israel’s atrocities constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity. The report urges the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate the massacre, prosecute those responsible, and issue arrest warrants for Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
Additionally, it calls for economic and political sanctions against Israel, including an immediate cessation of arms sales and military aid.
The international community is now facing growing pressure to intervene. Human rights organizations and legal bodies are calling for independent inquiries into Israel’s military attacks in Gaza, urging global leaders to hold perpetrators accountable for genocide against the Palestinian people.
As Gaza continues to endure relentless bombardment, survivors of the Juha family massacre demand justice—not just for their lost loved ones, but for all Palestinians facing the same fate.
