DaysofPal – The Government Media Office (GMO in Gaza warned on Friday that the humanitarian situation in the enclave is deteriorating rapidly as winter sets in, with nearly 1.5 million displaced Palestinians facing life-threatening conditions in makeshift camps lacking the most basic necessities.
In a statement, the GMO said suffering has only intensified despite the ceasefire agreement, accusing Israel of reneging on its commitments to allow the entry of humanitarian aid, shelter materials, and essential supplies.
These restrictions, it said, have dramatically worsened the conditions of displaced families sheltering in overcrowded camps and emergency centers.
The GMO stressed that Gaza urgently requires 250,000 tents and 100,000 caravans to provide temporary housing for families whose homes were destroyed, calling the current international inaction “unacceptable.”
It urged the United Nations, mediators, and relevant states to intervene immediately to deliver emergency aid and ease the suffering of civilians.
The warnings come as powerful winter storms batter the Gaza Strip, further exposing the vulnerability of displaced communities. Floodwaters engulfed an entire children’s floor at Al-Sadaqa Hospital in Gaza City, where Civil Defense teams said they were unable to assist due to equipment shortages caused by the Israeli blockade. Al-Rantisi Children’s Hospital also flooded after having already sustained heavy damage from previous Israeli attacks.
Civil Defense spokesman Mahmoud Basal reported that hundreds of tents across Gaza, particularly in Gaza City, were submerged, destroying belongings and clothing that residents had salvaged from beneath the rubble of their destroyed homes.
He also warned that many displaced families are now living in buildings at risk of collapse, raising fears of deadly structural failures during heavy rainfall.
The displaced population, he added, is facing “a tragic and unlivable reality,” with severe shortages of shelter, essential supplies, and vital services under the continuing blockade.
Newly released figures from the Government Media Office paint an even grimmer picture. According to the latest data, Israel’s military assault has destroyed 90% of Gaza’s civilian infrastructure, causing initial losses estimated at $70 billion.
The offensive has completely demolished 268,000 housing units, rendered 148,000 more uninhabitable, and partially damaged another 153,000.
