Gaza’s Remaining Charity Kitchens Face Imminent Shutdown

DaysofPal—The humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip is reaching a breaking point as dozens of community kitchens—many of which have been feeding tens of thousands of desperate residents daily—are on the verge of shutting down.

Without immediate aid deliveries, these vital lifelines could close their doors within days, leaving countless families without access to food.

At Al-Salam Oriental Food community kitchen in Gaza City, Salah Abu Haseera is bracing for what may be one of the last meals he serves to the 20,000 people who rely on his efforts each day. Speaking to Reuters by phone, Abu Haseera voiced his fears about the future.

“We face huge challenges in keeping going. We may go out of operation within a week, or maybe less,” he said, highlighting the dire shortages of supplies that are crippling operations across the enclave.

Community kitchens in Gaza range from modest one-room setups to larger restaurant-style facilities.

These grassroots efforts have become a critical safety net for the population since the Israeli blockade tightened in early March. However, the situation has grown increasingly precarious.

Amjad Shawa, director of the Palestinian NGOs Network (PNGO) in Gaza, told Reuters that only 70 to 80 community kitchens remain operational—a sharp decline from approximately 170 before the crossings were closed.

On Monday alone, 15 additional kitchens were forced to shut their doors due to depleted resources.

“In four to five days, these community kitchens will close their doors,” Shawa warned, painting a grim picture of what lies ahead if aid does not reach the Strip soon.

The Impact of the Israeli Blockade

The Israeli occupation imposed its total blockade on Gaza on March 2, abandoning a January ceasefire agreement with Hamas to pressure the group into accepting new terms. This move marks the longest closure the territory has ever faced, compounding an already devastating humanitarian crisis.

The blockade has effectively halted the flow of food, medicine, fuel, and other essential supplies into Gaza, leaving its two million residents grappling with severe shortages. For many, charity kitchens have been their sole source of sustenance. With these kitchens now teetering on collapse, fears are mounting over the potential consequences for vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly, and those suffering from malnutrition.

Calls for Urgent Action

Humanitarian organizations and local leaders are sounding the alarm, urging Israel and the international community to intervene before it’s too late.

The impending closure of Gaza’s remaining charity kitchens threatens to plunge the region further into chaos, with widespread hunger and starvation becoming inevitable outcomes.

For Salah Abu Haseera and countless others like him, time is running out. “We’re doing everything we can to keep serving meals,” he said, his voice heavy with concern. “But without help, there’s nothing more we can do.”

As the world watches, the question remains: Will decisive action be taken to reopen the crossings and deliver life-saving aid? Or will Gaza’s fragile lifelines disappear entirely, leaving its people to face the unimaginable consequences of prolonged deprivation?
