DaysofPal- Dr. Mohammad Abu Salmiya, Director of Al-Shifa Medical Complex, has issued a grave warning that the continued closure of Gaza’s crossings is endangering thousands of patients, with the number of deaths expected to rise sharply if restrictions are not lifted soon.
“We have prepared lists of patients ready to leave for treatment abroad,” Abu Salmiya said. “But the ongoing closure of the crossings threatens to increase the number of martyrs.” He added.
According to the hospital’s data, Gaza currently has 2,000 patients who have undergone amputations and more than 5,000 cancer patients urgently needing treatment outside the Strip.
Abu Salmiya revealed that deaths have already been recorded among kidney and chronic disease patients as a result of the Israeli ban on medical equipment and supplies entering Gaza.
He added that the health crisis extends beyond critical illnesses, noting that more than 3,000 patients have lost their sight and over 1,000 have lost their hearing, all requiring immediate surgical interventions that are unavailable due to the siege.
Abu Salmiya noted the Israeli occupation is waging a “war of extermination against patients” by maintaining the blockade and denying essential medical materials entry into the territory.
He urged the international community and humanitarian organizations to intervene immediately to open the crossings and allow medical evacuations, warning that “the healthcare system in Gaza is collapsing, and lives are being lost every day.”
