Philippe Lazzarini, the head of Unrwa, remarked on Monday June 24th, 2024 that catastrophic levels of hunger have beset the Gaza Strip due to deliberate human actions.
Lazzarini conveyed to the advisory commission of the UN agency that thay we have borne witness to unprecedented humanitarian failures in the past nine months in a region scarred by decades of war and Israeli atrocities.
The most catastrophic is that children are succumbing to malnutrition and dehydration, even as essential supplies of food and clean water languish in trucks.
Recent weeks have seen Israeli forces intensifying their eight-month blockade on northern Gaza, obstructing crucial deliveries of life-saving food and medical supplies. Furthermore, there has been an escalation in assaults on humanitarian workers and service providers.
Israeli policies have exacerbated the crisis of starvation, particularly in northern Gaza, where four children perished from malnutrition in the last week alone.
“The breakdown of civil order has led to widespread looting and smuggling, hindering the distribution of urgently needed humanitarian assistance,” lamented Lazzarini. Despite that “Gazans cling to life amidst repeated displacement across a devastated landscape,” he added.
The UN Agency for the Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) also confirmed that “Palestine Refugees in Gaza are struggling to survive a humanitarian tragedy that, for the older generations, is a chilling echo of their past. Young and old alike continue to try to hold on to their right to exist.”
