DaysofPal- A report by the British news outlet Middle East Eye highlighted a striking disparity in the Israeli blockade policies toward Gaza, showing that while luxury and non-essential goods are allowed in, critical supplies like medicines and essential food remain restricted.
Supermarkets in Gaza that reopened after the recent ceasefire were reportedly filled with products such as chocolate, soft drinks, and cigarettes, while vital medicines and staple foods were scarce or completely absent.
Resident Munther Al-Sharafi said, “Can you imagine having chocolate in Gaza while there are no antibiotics? Or having fruit but no bandages or surgical thread?”
He added that there is an almost total shortage of essential items like meat, chicken, fish, and eggs, describing the situation as “a cruel paradox that people endure under the ongoing siege.”
According to the report, the list of allowed goods largely includes carbohydrates, sugars, and processed fats, such as flour, pasta, canned goods, chocolate, and soft drinks, whereas animal-based proteins are either restricted or severely limited.
Eggs are entirely absent, dairy products are rare, and permitted quantities of chicken and frozen meat are extremely limited, driving prices up and placing them out of reach for most residents.
Middle East Eye noted that this selective allowance reflects the Israeli use of border crossings as tools for economic and humanitarian pressure, creating a surreal reality where supermarket shelves are full while hospitals remain empty of essential medicine.
The Gaza Government Media Office confirmed that since the ceasefire, an average of only 171 aid trucks enter daily, far below the 600 trucks stipulated in the humanitarian protocol.
The office warned that such limited supplies fail to meet the minimum food, medical, and living needs of Gaza’s 2.4 million residents and stressed the urgent need for at least 600 trucks per day carrying food, medicine, fuel, cooking gas, and health sector supplies.
The office further stated that the Israeli occupation currently prevents the entry of over 350 essential food items needed by children, patients, the wounded, and other vulnerable groups.
Restricted items include eggs, red and white meat, fish, cheese, dairy products, vegetables, nutritional supplements, and dozens of other items essential for pregnant women, patients, and immunocompromised individuals.
In contrast, non-essential goods like soft drinks, chocolate, processed meals, and chips are allowed in larger quantities and reach markets at prices up to 15 times their actual value due to the Israeli control over supply chains.
This reflects a deliberate policy of engineered starvation, control over food security, and direct targeting of civilian life.
The Gaza Government Media Office reiterated its full readiness to facilitate the entry and distribution of humanitarian aid in coordination with UN agencies and Arab and international relief organizations, ensuring that aid reaches all governorates and vital centers to benefit the resilient Palestinian population.
