DayofPal– Israeli special forces, posing as members of the Palestinian Civil Defense, were exposed by Gaza resistance fighters in Rafah, southern Gaza, according to reports from Israeli media.
This covert Israeli unit, which infiltrated the area via the Kerem Shalom crossing, faced off against the resistance, leading to casualties and injuries among the Israeli troops.
The use of Civil Defense uniforms as a disguise has sparked significant alarm over potential Israeli breaches of international law.
According to the laws of armed conflict, such tactics are classified as perfidy—a war crime that entails misleading an opponent by misusing protected symbols or civilian attire to conduct military operations.
International law explicitly forbids combatants from masquerading as civilians or protected personnel, such as humanitarian or civil defense workers, during military operations.
These groups are shielded under the Geneva Conventions, and using their uniforms in this way breaches the principle of distinction, which mandates that all parties in a conflict clearly differentiate between combatants and civilians.
Civilians and humanitarian workers receive specific protections, and the deception of wearing their uniforms not only undermines these safeguards but also puts genuine aid workers and innocent civilians at risk.
The incident in Gaza is a clear breach of these principles, with Israeli forces reportedly exploiting the neutral and protected status of Civil Defense personnel to attempt military infiltration.
This is not the first time that Israeli troops disguised in civilian uniforms. Last November, an Israeli special unit disguised in medical uniform and hid in an ambulance when it tried to invade into Al-Nuseirate to release Israeli prisoners. The operation failed as resistance fighters uncovered the unit and clashed with the soldiers.
This discovery comes amid Israel’s continued genocide in Gaza, marked by repeated efforts to infiltrate the northern regions, especially the Jabalia refugee camp.
Since October 6, 2024, Israeli forces have launched their third ground incursion in the area this year. Palestinian factions have reported intense clashes with Israeli troops across the Strip, underscoring their steadfast resistance to these relentless operations.
