Gaza People Fear Displacement amid Escalating Israeli Violations

DaysofPal- Concern is mounting across the Gaza Strip over the so-called Israeli “Yellow Line,” which is a military barrier that many Palestinians believe is being used to impose permanent displacement and redraw realities on the ground.

For Fouad al-Nabahine, a 60-year-old displaced resident now living in a UNRWA shelter in the Nuseirat refugee camp, the line has erased any immediate hope of returning home.

His town of Juhar al-Deek, along with his former house, now lies entirely beyond the restricted zone, fueling fears that his forced displacement will not be temporary.

Al-Nabahine, who has been displaced repeatedly during previous Israeli genocidal war on Gaza, said the current war has been the most punishing of his life.

“I have lived through many wars, but this genocide is the hardest stage Palestinians have ever faced,” he said.
When the war began in October 2023, he expected displacement to last weeks or months. Instead, more than two years later, his family has lost all its homes and businesses.

For decades, he worked in farming and livestock raising with his sons and grandchildren, but now sees no clear path back to his land near Gaza’s eastern fence.

Fears have intensified following recent remarks by Israeli Army Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, who referred to the Yellow Line as a “new border” separating Gaza from the Israeli occupation.

The comments run counter to understandings linked to a ceasefire deal brokered by Egypt, Turkey, and Qatar, which envisioned Israeli withdrawal from the area during a later phase of the agreement.

The Yellow Line was erected after a ceasefire took effect on Oct. 10 and consists of large yellow concrete blocks marked with warning signs prohibiting residents from approaching or returning to areas beyond it.

The barrier stretches along Gaza’s northern, eastern, and southern edges and now covers more than 53 percent of the enclave’s 365 square kilometers, according to estimates.

The restrictions have also devastated Gaza’s agricultural sector. Suleiman Hamad, 55, a farmer from Beit Hanoun in northern Gaza, has been unable to access his three-dunum plot of farmland.

“Each time we rebuild and return to our land, the occupation comes back to impose a new reality, this war has destroyed everything a person spends a lifetime building, ” he said.

Hamad said the ceasefire briefly revived hopes of returning to his land during the agreement’s second phase.
He spoke with longing about cultivating his fields again and supplying local markets, but said Israeli statements suggesting permanent displacement have cast a shadow over those expectations.

Beyond farmers and livestock owners, the Yellow Line has displaced an estimated one million residents from neighborhoods now sealed off, effectively splitting Gaza in two and deepening the humanitarian crisis.

Government data indicate that Israeli forces have continued expanding the restricted zones through recurring ground operations. Areas under full Israeli control now include Rafah, eastern Khan Younis, parts of central Gaza, and large sections of Gaza City neighborhoods such as Shujaiya, Tuffah, and Zaytoun, as well as towns in the north.

Ismail al-Thawabteh, director of Gaza’s Government Media Office, said the Yellow Line represents a deliberate attempt to enforce forced displacement and establish buffer zones through military power.

He noted that the line was initially intended as a reference for Israeli withdrawal under an agreement signed in Egypt’s Sharm el-Sheikh, but was later turned into a concrete reality.

Al-Thawabteh said the expansion has barred more than one million people from returning to their destroyed homes, prolonged displacement, hindered aid delivery, and obstructed reconstruction, agriculture, and livestock projects.

He also accused Israeli forces of killing civilians who live near the line or who tried to check on their homes or retrieve basic belongings.

Despite the ceasefire, military operations have continued near the Yellow Line, he said, urging mediators to enforce the agreement and allow recovery and reconstruction efforts to begin.

Hamas has reported 813 Israeli violations of the ceasefire, averaging 25 per day, including the demolition of 145 homes and facilities within the restricted zone.

The group said the actions are intended to render the areas uninhabitable and permanently prevent residents from returning.

As winter sets in and displacement drags on, many Palestinians in Gaza fear the Yellow Line will become a lasting boundary, reshaping both the territory and the lives of those forced from their homes.
