DaysofPal- The Ministry of Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners in the Gaza Strip issued an urgent distress call this Sunday directed at the International Committee of the Red Cross, the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and international human rights organizations. This appeal seeks to save Palestinian prisoners held within Israeli detention centers. This call is being made in conjunction with the upcoming April 17 Palestinian Prisoners’ Day.
The Ministry urged these international bodies to fulfill their legal and moral obligations regarding the severe violations faced by thousands of Palestinian detainees.
These practices contradict the fundamental principles of international humanitarian law and the Fourth Geneva Convention. According to the appeal, internal reports indicate that conditions inside the prisons have reached the level of a humanitarian catastrophe.
The statement detailed that detainees suffer from a systematic policy of starvation, which has led to a sharp decline in their health. Deliberate medical negligence deprives the sick and wounded of essential treatment. Furthermore, prisoners face extreme overcrowding, humiliating detention conditions, and total isolation from the outside world. This isolation includes the denial of lawyer visits.
The Ministry demanded immediate action, including the deployment of independent international missions to inspect the prisons and assess the living conditions of the detainees.
It also called for pressure to ensure the immediate provision of medical care and the restoration of family visits and humanitarian communication. Additionally, the appeal stressed the need to hold those responsible for these violations accountable in international legal forums.
The Ministry warned that international silence regarding these practices provides a green light for continued mistreatment. It expressed hope for the implementation of concrete measures to save the lives of prisoners before it’s too late.
More than 9,500 Palestinian prisoners are presently detained, according to Ministry-documented data. This number includes 350 minors and 133 women. These thousands of detainees also face the potential risks associated with the proposed execution law.
