Gaza fishermen were forced this morning to return to shore and cut short their fishing endeavor after Israeli occupation navy boats opened fire in their direction, according to local sources.
They said the Israeli occupation navy opened heavy machine gunfire at the fishing boats sailing in the northern waters of the Gaza Strip, disrupting their work and forcing them to return to shore to avoid being injured or detained. No one was hurt, said the sources.
The Israeli occupation navy regularly harasses and attacks Gaza fishermen sailing within the six nautical miles in the southern Gaza coast allowed to them by Israel as part of its 12-year-long blockade on the Gaza Strip or three nautical miles in the northern Gaza coast.
Fishing is a main source of income for thousands of Gazan households in the densely populated, impoverished and besieged Gaza Strip.
Meanwhile, Israeli occupation soldiers stationed at a military watchtower east of the city of Khan Yunis in the south of the Gaza Strip opened fire at farmers and shepherds while in lands east of the town of Abasan and forced them to leave the area.
