DaysofPal- The Hamas Movement announced on Wednesday that a potential ceasefire agreement in Gaza has been delayed due to new conditions imposed by Israel. This development comes amid ongoing negotiations for a ceasefire and prisoner exchange, which are taking place in Doha with Qatari and Egyptian mediation.
In a statement, Hamas emphasized its commitment to the negotiation process, stating that it has shown responsibility and flexibility during the talks. However, it accused that “Israeli occupation authorities imposed new issues and conditions related to the withdrawal, ceasefire, prisoners, and the return of the displaced, which delayed reaching a potential agreement.”
The announcement follows Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s statement on Tuesday that the Israeli negotiating team had left Doha after “an important week of negotiations” to conduct internal consultations regarding the prisoner exchange deal with Hamas.
Observers view this move as part of a pattern of delays in negotiations, noting that Netanyahu has previously hinted at progress in talks only to later insist on carrying on with its more than 14-month war of genocide in the Gaza Strip.
In the aftermath of Netanyahu’s announcement, the Hebrew newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported that the gap between the Israeli and Hamas positions is not significant and could allow for understandings to be reached. The report suggested progress had been made on key issues, including agreements on the Salah al-Din (Philadelphi) and Netzarim axes, ceasefire terms, and the release of Israeli prisoners.
The ongoing genocidal war on Gaza has resulted in a devastating humanitarian crisis. According to Gaza-based health authorities, the Palestinian death toll from Israeli attacks has risen to 45,36136. The international community continues to call for an immediate ceasefire and a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
