DaysofPal – Gaza’s Government Media Office said on Sunday that the Gaza Strip is confronting “one of the worst catastrophes in modern history,” warning that the population is facing a severe and worsening crisis due to the acute shortage of tents needed to shelter the displaced.
In an official statement, the office urged all countries to pressure Israel to immediately allow humanitarian aid into the besieged territory.
“We are facing a catastrophic crisis in the Strip due to the lack of food, medicine, and tents,” the statement read.
Officials stressed that the healthcare system is on the verge of total collapse and requires urgent international intervention. Dr. Ismail al-Thawabta, director of the Government Media Office, warned that residents are suffering under freezing temperatures and heavy rainfall as winter conditions worsen.
In an interview, al-Thawabta described the situation as “an unprecedented, tragic humanitarian catastrophe,” saying the crisis has intensified since the beginning of what he referred to as a genocide two years ago.
He noted that although a ceasefire took effect nearly a month ago, border crossings remain closed, and Israeli forces have continued to delay the entry of shelter materials despite provisions in the humanitarian ceasefire agreement requiring their delivery.
Al-Thawabta said the catastrophe unfolding in Gaza is exactly what international agencies had warned about for months. “This is what the Israeli occupation has aimed for, exacerbating the humanitarian disaster until it reaches this real and devastating collapse,” he said.
He added that Israeli forces have destroyed nearly 288,000 Palestinian housing units over the past two years, displacing hundreds of thousands of families.
“These families are living in makeshift tents, some made of cloth, others of plastic, scattered across every governorate in Gaza. After two years of bombardment, displacement, and a suffocating blockade, these tents have deteriorated completely. Nothing is left of them.”
Gaza authorities reiterated their urgent plea for immediate aid, warning that without shelter, food, medicine, and a functioning health system, the Strip faces a humanitarian breakdown with consequences that will deepen with every passing day.
