The UK-based Friends of Al-Aqsa (FOA) condemned on Wednesday 11 May 2022 the Israeli occupation killing of Al Jazeera’s journalist Shireen Abu Akleh while she was covering Israeli raids in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin.
“This morning beloved Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was murdered by Israeli Occupation Forces while reporting from Jenin. Shireen was fatally shot in the ear by an Israeli sniper, despite being clearly marked as press with a helmet and blue flak jacket with ‘PRESS’ across the front and back,” FOA said in a statement.
“Under international law, it is a war crime to target journalists. Yet this is not the first time Israeli Occupation Forces have done this. In 2018, Palestinian journalist Yasser Murtaja was shot and killed whilst covering the Great March of Return at the fence between Gaza and Israel. Murtaja was also wearing a blue flak jacket clearly marked ‘PRESS’,” it added.
“Since 2000, Israeli Occupation Forces have murdered at least 46 Palestinian journalists. This targeting of journalists by Israel is disgraceful. FOA calls for immediate sanctions on Israel for its continuous war crimes.”
