DayofPal– International human rights experts are calling for the recognition of the term “femi-genocide” to describe the systematic killings of women in Gaza at the hands of Israeli forces.
Ms. Reem Alsalem, the UN Rapporteur on violence against women and girls, describes the Israeli war on Gaza women as “femi-genocide,” calling to adopt new terms in the context.
The term emphasizes the gendered nature of the violence, with women specifically targeted due to their identity as Palestinians.
Alongside this, experts are also advocating the use of “genocidal reproductive violence” to highlight Israel’s calculated attempts to destroy Gaza’s population and disrupt its continuity.
One of the most glaring examples of this violence was the bombing of Gaza’s only IVF clinic, which has left pregnant women without access to essential healthcare.
This attack, aimed at disrupting the reproductive health of Palestinian women, is part of a broader strategy that seeks to undermine the Palestinian population’s ability to sustain itself.
The numbers paint a devastating picture of women. Alsalem report showed that 12,298 women have been killed as a direct result of the ongoing Israelo atrocities with800,000 women have been forcibly displaced, their homes destroyed and their lives uprooted.
In addition, one million women and girls are suffering from severe food insecurity, unable to access basic nutrition due to the blockade and ongoing attacks.
Furthermore, the war has taken a horrific toll on the reproductive health of women in Gaza. Miscarriages have increased by 300%, with bombings and medical trauma contributing to the rising number of losses.
700,000 women of childbearing age are also grappling with severe malnutrition, putting both their health and the health of their unborn children at grave risk.
These atrocities are part of a larger pattern of violence designed not only to kill but to dismantle the very fabric of Palestinian society.
The use of terms like “femi-genocide” and “genocidal reproductive violence” aims to underscore the targeted nature of these actions, and the international community is calling for urgent recognition of the broader implications for Gaza’s future.
Despite the current ceasefire, the people of Gaza face an uncertain future, with countless women suffering the consequences of a war that is determined to erase not only their lives but their ability to rebuild.
