DaysofPal- A recent report by Doctors Without Borders (MSF), titled “Gaza: Life in a Death Trap,” has uncovered alarming evidence of what the organization describes as “clear signs of ethnic cleansing” in the Gaza Strip, perpetrated by Israeli military actions.
The report highlights the devastating impact of the recent military offensive in the north of Gaza, which MSF characterizes as a “clear illustration of the brutal war the Israeli forces are waging on Gaza.” This offensive has resulted in the forced displacement, trapping, and bombing of Palestinian civilians, effectively wiping out Palestinian life in the area.
As of mid-October, the report notes that only 17 of Gaza’s 36 hospitals were partially functioning, while the other 19 hospitals were completely out of service. The last remaining oncological hospital in Gaza has shut down due to a lack of fuel, and MSF teams have been forced to perform surgeries without sufficient anesthesia. This collapse of the health care system has exacerbated the suffering, with widespread skin diseases, upper respiratory tract infections, and diarrhoea prevalent due to appalling hygiene conditions. Additionally, children are missing crucial vaccinations against diseases such as polio and measles.
MSF staff have faced significant violence and intimidation. Over the first 12 months of the conflict, MSF teams were subject to 41 attacks and violent incidents, including air strikes, shelling, violent incursions in health facilities, direct fire on shelters and convoys, and arbitrary detention by Israeli forces. Tragically, eight MSF workers have been killed during this period35.
The report underscores that the firsthand observations of MSF medical teams are consistent with descriptions provided by an increasing number of legal experts and organizations, which conclude that genocide is taking place in Gaza. The systematic denial of humanitarian assistance, the destruction of essential infrastructure, and the forced displacement of nearly 1.9 million Palestinians (approximately 90% of the population) all contribute to this dire assessment.
Forced Displacement and Ethnic Cleansing
The forced displacement of Palestinians is a central theme of the report. Israeli forces have ordered mass evacuations, often with contradictory, misleading, and last-minute instructions, leaving no safe destination within Gaza. The creation of “buffer zones” and “security corridors” has involved the systematic destruction of buildings and agricultural land, exacerbating food shortages and indicating a policy of permanent ethnic cleansing. Senior Israeli officials have explicitly stated that there will be no return to certain areas, such as northern Gaza, further solidifying fears of permanent depopulation.
MSF is urgently calling for an immediate ceasefire to save lives and enable the flow of humanitarian aid. The organization emphasizes the need for states to leverage their influence to alleviate the suffering of the people in Gaza and to uphold the rules of war. The report stresses that the current conditions are apocalyptic, with nowhere safe and no exit from the shattered enclave.
The findings of the MSF report paint a grim picture of the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, highlighting the urgent need for international intervention to prevent further atrocities and ensure the protection of civilian lives.
