DaysofPal- Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, is reportedly being held at the infamous Sde Teiman military base, which serves as a detention center, according to recently released Palestinian detainees. The facility has garnered a reputation for its harsh treatment of detainees.
CNN cited two Palestinians who were recently released from Sde Teiman. They confirmed seeing Dr. Abu Safiya at the detention center. One detainee, Ahmed Al-Sayed Salim, 18, stated, “A doctor from Abu Safiya’s family was brought to the prison last Saturday.” Salim, who hails from northern Gaza, was arrested 42 days ago at an Israeli checkpoint while attempting to leave the northern Gaza Strip. He added that he personally knew Dr. Abu Safiya.
Another former detainee, Yahya Zaqout, also detained 42 days ago, reported that while he did not see Dr. Abu Safiya directly, he was held in a cell adjacent to him. “I heard them calling his name among the names they call every morning and evening, and we had men who were brought to our cell and told us they were held along with Dr. Hussam,” Zaqout explained.
Additionally, Alaa Abu Banat, another Gazan detainee who was arrested 43 days ago while returning home, corroborated the reports. Abu Banat mentioned that a medical team from Kamal Adwan Hospital had been brought to Sde Teiman, further suggesting Dr. Abu Safiya’s presence there. “They are all still in detention, being very badly treated, especially the doctors,” Abu Banat told CNN.
These testimonies shed light on the harsh conditions faced by detainees in Sde Teiman and raise serious concerns about the treatment of Palestinian medical professionals under Israeli custody.
