The cancer-patient Palestinian detainee Walid Daqqa‘s health is being deteriorated inside Israeli prisons amid deliberate Israeli ignorance, his wife Sanaa Salama reported Sunday, June 4, 2023.

“Walid suffers from heart failure and lung issues, and his health condition is very dangerous,” said Salama.

She pointed out that the Israeli prison administration has returned Daqqa to Ramla prison last Thursday despite his serious health status and need for intensive medical follow-up and care.

Daqqa’s wife added that he is in need of ongoing medical care to avoid going into more frequent relapses.

Daqqa was diagnosed with a rare type of bone marrow cancer several months ago and has been suffering successive health setbacks.

Earlier, after diagnosing him, the Israeli prison administration’s medical department stated that “his days are numbered and there is an immediate risk to his life”.

Daqqa’s deteriorated health has put a strain on his family, driving them to apply a request to the Israeli court for early parole.

The Israeli Early Release Authority refused to release the detainee Daqqa, who has been detained since 1986, saying that it is not within its jurisdiction and will refer it to the Supreme Committee.

Like other Palestinian detainees, Daqqa, who was previously diagnosed with leukemia in 2015, has suffered from medical negligence during his 37 years in prison, which has worsened his health.

The number of sick Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons has increased to 750, including patients with chronic and serious diseases and 26 cancer patients, according to Wa’ed Association for Detainees and Ex-detainees.
