Papua New Guinea inaugurated on Tuesday, 5 September 2023 its embassy to ‘Israel’ in occupied Jerusalem, becoming the fifth country to normalize its relations with the Israeli occupation.
The embassy was opened in the presence of Israeli occupation Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Papua New Guinean Prime Minister James Marape. Marape claimed that the decision to move the mission from ‘Tel Aviv’ to Jerusalem was inspired by God.
“Many nations choose not to open their embassies in Jerusalem, but we have made a conscious choice,” Marape said at the embassy’s inauguration ceremony.
The Pacific nation became the fifth country in the world to open an embassy in occupied Jerusalem after the US, Honduras, Kosovo, and Guatemala.
It is worth noting that Papua New Guinea normalized its relations with Israeli occupation in 1978, three years after the Pacific nation gained independence from Australia.
Papua New Guinean authorities in return have stopped voting in recent years on resolutions against Israeli occupation crimes at the UN.
In 2020, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco established official ties with Israeli occupation as part of the US-brokered normalization agreements in 2020.
