DayofPal– Bolivia has officially aligned itself with South Africa’s case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), accusing Israel of breaching the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in light of Israel’s ongoing offensive in Gaza.
The ICJ confirmed the South American nation’s intervention in the case on Wednesday, making Bolivia the latest country to support the proceedings. Other nations backing the case include Colombia, Libya, Spain, and Mexico.
This development follows Bolivia’s decision to sever diplomatic ties with Israel in November, a move made in response to the “disproportionate” nature of Israel’s assaults on Gaza. At that time, Israel characterized Bolivia’s stance as “a surrender to terrorism.”
On January 26, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) delivered a pivotal ruling, compelling Israel to implement all necessary measures to avert acts of genocide during its operations in Gaza.
The court also demanded “unimpeded access” for UN-mandated investigators to scrutinize the allegations.
Yet, in defiance of these legally binding directives, Israel has chosen to ignore the court’s authority. In its most recent submission, Bolivia asserted that Israel’s “genocidal war” remains relentless and ongoing.
While the ICJ’s rulings carry legal weight, enforcement remains a challenge, as the court has no direct mechanism to compel compliance.
A separate ICJ advisory opinion issued in July deemed Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory “unlawful” and urged for its immediate cessation.
The ongoing genocide in Gaza has killed at least 42,010 people, most of them women and children, according to official figures, which the United Nations deems reliable. Meanwhile, Israeli authorities have supported settlers’ arms attacks on Palestinian lands aiming to seize them for building more colonial outposts and settlements.
