Far-right-wing Israeli Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, issued an amendment to the law on the administrative release of Palestinian prisoners, revoking the policy that allowed early release for some prisoners on Sunday, July 30, 2023.
According to the Hebrew newspaper “Maariv,” as reported by the local Safa agency, Itamar Ben-Gvir amended the law of early release of prisoners last week to exclude security prisoners.
Under the amendment, prisoners who have met the conditions for early release will no longer be released before completing their full detention period.
Since joining Israel’s extremist government, Ben-Gvir has been determined to impose harsh sanctions on Palestinians, especially prisoners, making their already difficult lives under Israeli occupation even more unbearable.
The sanctions imposed on prisoners under Ben-Gvir’s leadership include controlling their water usage, reducing showering time to specific hours, and subjecting them to increased raids and searches with stun grenades and sniffer dogs.
Prisoners have also faced inadequate food, increased solitary confinement, removal of television sets, and escalating transfers, while the approval of capital punishment for prisoners involved in armed resistance is being considered. These measures further exacerbate the suffering of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.
Israel currently holds up to 5,000 Palestinian detainees, including 33 women and 160 children, according to statistics by Addameer. Among them, 1132 are held under administrative detention.
