DaysofPal- A newly released video showing far-right Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir confronting imprisoned Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti inside his cell has ignited a wave of condemnation and raised serious concerns for Barghouti’s safety.
The footage, aired by Israeli media, captures Ben Gvir entering Barghouti’s cell in Ganot Prison (formerly Ramon and Nafha prisons) and delivering a direct threat: “You will not defeat us. Whoever harms the people of Israel… we will erase him.”
Barghouti, who has been held in solitary confinement for the past two years, appeared visibly frail, with significant weight loss and altered facial features, fueling alarm among his family and supporters.
His wife, lawyer Fadwa Barghouti, wrote on Facebook that she struggled to recognize him, describing the “exhaustion and hunger” he is enduring.
She accused Israeli authorities of relentlessly pursuing her husband, even in isolation, but expressed confidence in his unbroken spirit and commitment to ending his people’s suffering.
His son, Qassam Barghouti, warned that the threats from Ben Gvir were direct and credible, adding that prison authorities have physically assaulted his father multiple times since October 7, 2023.
The incident has drawn sharp criticism from Palestinian political circles and human rights organizations, who hold the Israeli occupation fully responsible for Barghouti’s well-being.
Calls are mounting for international intervention to ensure his safety and to investigate the treatment of Palestinian political prisoners.
Barghouti, a prominent figure in the Palestinian national movement, is serving multiple life sentences in an Israeli prison.
His deteriorating condition and the publicized threats have intensified fears of targeted harm against him.
