DayofPal—Amnesty International has condemned the international community’s failure to hold Israel accountable for its escalating violations of international law in the occupied West Bank.
It warned that global impunity has emboldened the Israeli government to accelerate its annexation and apartheid policies.
The human rights group said in a statement on Thursday that Israel’s far-right government, led by war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu, has “turbocharged” efforts to dispossess Palestinians, expand illegal settlements, and institutionalize state-backed settler attacks.
Amnesty highlighted that the unwavering support of the United States, combined with the lack of meaningful international action, has effectively allowed Israel to act with impunity.
“The formalization of land grabs, the expansion of illegal settlements, and state-backed settler attacks are a direct indictment of the international community’s catastrophic failure to enforce international law,” Erika Guevara-Rosas, Amnesty International’s senior director for research and advocacy, said.
She added that measures such as suspending the EU-Israel Association Agreement could have been used to deter Israel but were ignored.
Since Israel’s 2023 war on Gaza, the West Bank has witnessed unprecedented settlement expansion and military attacks.
Israeli army raids, home demolitions, and arrests have surged, while settlers attack Palestinians and destroy property with state protection.
UN figures report that at least 1,094 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since October 2023.
Amnesty detailed recent Israeli government actions that constitute de facto annexation:
December 10, 2025: Israel announced 3,401 new housing units in the E1 area to expand Ma’ale Adumim and create a territorial link to East Jerusalem.
December 11, 2025: Approval of 19 new settlements, bringing the total approved under the current coalition to 68, with approximately 210 settlements overall.
January 5, 2026: Designation of nearly 700 dunams of Palestinian land in northern West Bank towns as “state land.”
February 8, 2026: Expansion of Israeli powers over Palestinian land sales and governance in occupied areas.
February 15, 2026: Allocation of 244 million shekels to facilitate land registration under Israeli law, formalizing annexation in Area C.
These moves blatantly defy international rulings, including the 2024 International Court of Justice decision declaring Israel’s occupation illegal and UN resolutions calling for an end to settlements.
“Instead of complying, Israel has invented new methods to entrench its occupation and apartheid,” Guevara-Rosas said.
