DaysofPal- Amnesty International Secretary General Agnes Callamard has warned of the global impact of what she calls the “Donald Trump effect” on human rights, particularly in Gaza.
Speaking to Al Jazeera at the Munich Security Conference, Callamard condemned the destruction of the fragile peace process, which she said had taken months to negotiate.
“In the case of Gaza, what we are witnessing is not even disruption… It is the cruel destruction of a peace process that has reached a very fragile state,” she stated. She accused Trump of further destabilizing the situation, making the next phase of peace negotiations “extraordinarily difficult.”
During the conference, she also denounced the ongoing forced displacement of civilians in Gaza, emphasizing its legal and moral implications. “It is a war crime to push people out of their places forcibly, and it could be a crime against humanity if it is well organized; in a nutshell, it amounts to ethnic cleansing if it was to be carried out,” she stated.
Her comments in Munich follow her earlier condemnation of President Donald Trump’s recent remarks advocating for the forcible transfer of around two million Palestinians from Gaza to neighboring countries. Earlier this month, reacting to Trump’s statement that the U.S. would “take over the Gaza Strip,” Callamard strongly criticized his rhetoric.
“President Trump’s remarks calling for the forcible transfer of Palestinians from the occupied Gaza Strip must be unequivocally and widely condemned. His language is inflammatory, outrageous, and shameful, and his proposal amounts to a flagrant violation of international law,” she said.
She further warned that any plan to forcibly deport Palestinians against their will would constitute a war crime. “When committed as part of a widespread or systematic attack on the civilian population, it would constitute a crime against humanity,” she added.
Urging the international community to take a firm stance, she called on countries such as Jordan and Lebanon to reject these actions. “This is where we need the rest of the world, the international community, and countries such as Jordan and Lebanon, to stand up and say ‘absolutely no,’ and to do so most resolutely and firmly,” she urged.
