DaysofPal- Amnesty International has urged the Israeli occupation to immediately release Dr. Hossam Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, who has been held in Israeli detention since December 27, 2024.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the organization described Dr. Abu Safiya as a prominent voice in Gaza’s devastated healthcare sector and said his continued detention constitutes arbitrary imprisonment.
According to a lawyer who recently visited Dr. Abu Safiya and other detainees, the physician has been subjected to abuse and ill-treatment.
The lawyer reported that Dr. Abu Safiya appeared to have lost significant weight, as Israeli prison authorities continue to impose harsh restrictions on Palestinian detainees’ access to adequate food, medical care, and personal hygiene supplies.
Amnesty International condemned the ongoing Israeli arbitrary detention of Dr. Abu Safiya without charge or trial, calling it a reflection of the systematic Israeli targeting of Palestinian healthcare workers and the broader destruction of Gaza’s health system.
Meanwhile, the Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office quoted Dr. Abu Safiya’s family as saying that Israeli authorities have extended his administrative detention for another six months.
The family expressed deep concern over his continued imprisonment without charge or fair trial, describing the extension as a severe psychological and humanitarian burden on his relatives, colleagues, and supporters around the world.
Dr. Abu Safiya’s case has drawn growing international attention as part of a broader pattern of Israeli arrests and mistreatment of Gaza’s medical professionals amid the collapse of the enclave’s healthcare system during the Israeli genocidal war.
