DayofPal—Two major insurance companies, Allianz and Aviva, have reportedly ended their coverage of Israeli arms manufacturer Elbit Systems, following sustained pressure from pro-Palestine activists.
Campaigners say the move demonstrates the impact of direct action against firms supporting Israel.
The protests were led by the group Palestine Action, which targeted the companies’ offices across the UK, including coordinated actions at 10 Allianz branches in a single day.
Aviva was also targeted over its insurance of UAV Engines Ltd, a subsidiary of Elbit, linked to drone attacks that killed seven aid workers in April 2024.
Huda Ammori, co-founder of Palestine Action, hailed the development as proof of the effectiveness of direct action, while affiliated groups highlighted that the campaign shows “direct action gets results.”
Elbit Systems, which dominates Israel’s land forces and combat drone supply, is accused of complicity in Israeli war crimes.
With the end of coverage by Allianz and Aviva, Elbit Systems UK now reportedly relies on Aspen Insurance, and UAV Engines is insured by Chubb.
On Tuesday, Greta Thunberg was arrested outside Aspen Insurance’s London office for displaying a placard in support of Palestine Action prisoners.
She was later released on bail and called for increased civilian action against escalating genocide and oppression.
This news marks a significant moment in ongoing campaigns targeting companies involved in the Israeli arms industry, showing the potential influence of coordinated activism.
