DaysofPal- Aid dropped from airplanes over Gaza, intended to ease the devastating hunger crisis, has instead killed many starving people and caused more casualties, chaos, and growing frustration among the besieged hungry population.
Young Gaza resident Adi Nahid Al-Qarraan described the aid drops as “humiliating” and grossly insufficient for a population trapped under siege.
In a viral video, amid a desperate crowd scrambling for aid boxes, Al-Qarraan questioned the effectiveness of the drops, asking, “Who will these supplies be enough for? Is this a humane way to feed a displaced and exhausted people suffering from war and famine?”
Tragically, Al-Qarraan himself was killed last week after being struck by a falling aid box during one of the chaotic distribution attempts.
Other civilians, including children, have also been injured or killed in similar incidents, highlighting the dangers of the airdrop method.
The Gaza Civil Defense has warned that airdrops risk civilian lives and often destroy tents belonging to displaced families.
Local officials say that since the start of the conflict in October 2023, at least 25 people have died as a direct result of falling aid packages.
Aid workers and residents alike call for a safer, more effective way to deliver supplies. “The solution is not to drop aid from the sky,” said widow Sanaa Ahmed, emphasizing the need for dignity and safety, especially for women and children.
International agencies echo this view. The UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) warns that airdrops are costly and inefficient, costing over 100 times more than land deliveries and providing far less aid.
The World Health Organization labeled airdrops “temporary and impractical,” calling for the reopening of land crossings to allow a steady flow of at least 600 trucks daily with food and medicine.
Amid a dire humanitarian crisis with widespread famine and malnutrition, the current system is failing Gaza’s two million residents.
Experts warn that without urgent and sustained aid through proper channels, the humanitarian catastrophe will deepen.
