DaysofPal – The Israeli army’s campaign against the press intensified on Monday when it struck the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Yunis, killing four Palestinian journalists. This brings the total number of media workers killed since October 7 to 244.
Medical sources reported that the attack on the hospital killed at least 15 Palestinians and wounded dozens more. Among the dead were Palestine TV and Reuters photographer Hossam al-Masri, Al Jazeera cameraman Mohammed Salama, Independent and AP photographer Maryam Abu Daqqa, and NBC journalist Moaz Abu Taha. Several other journalists were injured, while ambulance crews and civil defense workers also came under fire during rescue efforts.
The bombing targeted the hospital’s fourth floor before a second strike hit as ambulances arrived to retrieve the dead and wounded. Civil Defense confirmed the death of firefighter Imad Abdul Hakim al-Shaer and injuries to seven rescue workers in the attack.
Just two days earlier, Palestine TV cameraman Khaled al-Madhoun was also killed, underscoring the systematic effort by Israel to silence coverage of its ongoing war.
Journalist Maryam Abu Daqqa, who was killed in Monday’s strike, had written only a day earlier about the devastation engulfing Gaza. “When you see the dust covering what is most precious to you, you will realize how trivial life is,” she wrote on social media.
The Government Media Office in Gaza strongly condemned the killings, calling them part of Israel’s deliberate strategy to assassinate the “eye of truth” documenting its crimes.
It held Israel, the US administration, and European governments complicit in the genocide responsible for the deaths.
“We call on the international community and all journalism organizations to condemn these crimes, to prosecute Israel in international courts, and to bring its war criminals to justice,” the statement read. It urged urgent international pressure to stop the genocide and to protect journalists and media workers in Gaza.
